Midterm Grades

books

Midterm grades provide students with a progress check approximately halfway through the academic term. These grades are not final and do not appear on the official transcript, but they serve as an important indicator of academic standing and course performance at the midpoint. Midterm grades help students understand how well they are meeting course expectations and whether adjustments in study habits, attendance, or assignment completion may be necessary.

Purpose of Midterm Grades

  • To give students an early evaluation of academic performance
  • To identify areas needing improvement before final grades
  • To help advisors provide timely academic support and interventions
  • To encourage communication between students and instructors

Typical Midterm Grade Indicators

  • Letter Grades (A–F)

What Midterm Grades Mean

  • A–C or Satisfactory/Pass:
Student is performing at or above expected level. Continue current engagement and effort.
  • D or At-Risk:
Student is passing, but performance indicates a need for significant improvement. Meeting with the instructor or advisor is recommended.
  • F or Unsatisfactory/No Pass:
Student is not meeting course requirements. Immediate action is strongly encouraged—such as tutoring, attending office hours, or discussing options with an academic advisor.

Important Notes

  • Midterm grades do not impact GPA
  • They serve as feedback only, guiding progress for the remainder of the term.
  • Students are encouraged to review midterm grades with their academic advisor to plan strategies for success.

What if I have a bad midterm grade?

  • Freshmen are notified by their advisors if they receive a bad midterm grade. Students are required to meet with their advisor if they receive the following midterm grades: D and F.
