The Bachelor of Arts in Music provides students with a broad liberal arts experience along with a curriculum grounded in music theory, history, and performance.  Students will develop performance skills in individual private lessons, ensembles, and will present a senior recital for graduation.  Open electives for this degree provide students the opportunity to explore a variety of course options from across the university.

General Requirements

During enrollment in the university, all music majors are required to register for MUSM 1800 – Performance Class. This zero credit hour course records attendance at on-campus music recitals, concerts, and master classes.  Full-time enrollment requires attendance at a minimum of ten scheduled music events.  Part-time enrollment requires  attendance at a minimum of five scheduled music events. Students may substitute a maximum of two off-campus events with appropriate documentation.

During enrollment in the university, all music study majors are required to register and participate in the university concert band or jazz band if an instrumental major, or the university concert choir if a voice major, during the fall and spring semesters. Piano and guitar majors may choose concert band, jazz band or concert choir.

All music study majors must perform a senior recital, which must be a minimum of 25 minutes of music. Four weeks before the recital, the student must successfully complete a recital hearing for a minimum of two music faculty.

All music study majors will be required to pass proficiency examinations in theory, aural skills, piano, and the senior recital before graduation.

The Bachelor of Arts in Music with a Concentration in Music Production provides students with a broad liberal arts experience along with a curriculum grounded in traditional music theory, contemporary music theory, songwriting and arranging, and commercial music performance practices.  Students will develop performance skills in individual private lessons, the music production group ensemble, and will present a senior recital for graduation.  Open electives for this degree provide students the opportunity to explore a variety of course options from across the university including business marketing and accounting practices, radio and TV production, and creative writing for song lyrics.

The Bachelor of Arts in Music Education (PK-12) prepares students for a career teaching music at the elementary through high school levels in the areas of general music, choral/vocal music, and instrumental/band music. Students who successfully complete this program will graduate licensed to teach in the State of Illinois with a Professional Educator License (PEL) in music for grades PK-12. Recommendation for licensure entitlement requires successful completion of all program coursework and requirements, student teaching, and passing the Illinois Licensure Music Content Area Examination PK-12, and/or additional College of Education requirements as applicable.

A minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.5 in all program course work, either as transfer credit or completed at Chicago State University, is required for admission to the College of Education.

A grade of C or above is required in all general education, professional education and music courses, either as transfer credit or completed at Chicago State University. A grade of B or above is required in student teaching.

Admission to the College of Education requires a minimum grade point average of 2.5 in all program coursework. Enrollment in Student Teaching (MUSM 4076) requires successful completion of the Music Licensure Content Area Test (PK-12). The final grade for Student Teaching requires successful completion of the edTPA.

Admission to the College of Education is required prior to registration in any professional education courses other than MUSM 1261, ELCF 2000; PSYC 2020; and SP ED 4301.

A maximum of nine hours of professional education courses taken at a junior or community college can be transferred into the program.

Professional education courses completed more than five years before admission to the College of Education, either as transfer credit or at Chicago State University, will not be accepted.

Courses taken at CSU that are required in a teacher education program may be repeated no more than twice. A maximum of two professional education courses may be repeated for a higher grade. The highest grade will be included in calculating the grade point average. Students who do not earn a C grade or better in a required course after three attempts will be dropped from the program.
