Job Outlook

The market for quantum professionals is growing quickly and has a significant talent gap between the number of open positions and the number of qualified candidates, leading to competitive salaries.

  • Job growth: The number of quantum-related job postings surged by approximately 180% from 2020 to 2024. Experts project the quantum workforce will need over 100,000 additional workers by 2030.
  • Salary: While salaries vary by location, experience, and role, they are generally high. An entry-level quantum developer can expect to earn between $80,000 and $120,000, with senior research scientists and engineers earning upwards of $250,000.
  • Education: While a Ph.D. is often required for pure research roles, a growing number of industry jobs, particularly in software development and engineering, are accessible with a bachelor's or master's degree.

Chicago State University is a partner in the Mic2ExL project, funded by the National Science Foundation as a Chicagoland Partnership for Semiconductors and Microelectronics Experiential Learning. The Mic2ExL project offers paid internships for adults aged 18 or older. Learn more here
