(December 18, 2025) — The Chicago State University Board of Trustees has unanimously approved the addition of football. This historic vote ushers in a new chapter bringing the only NCAA Division I FCS program to the city of Chicago. The new chapter comes with over three years of preparation and hard work all leading to 2026, with spring practice scheduled ahead of the team's inaugural season.

The first-ever Chicago State football game is set for August 29, 2026, ushering in a new era for Cougar Athletics and providing students, alumni, the Southside and fans with an exciting opportunity to rally behind the Green and Navy on the gridiron.

Chicago State Football will compete as an independent program during its first season, allowing the Cougars to build their schedule across a diverse range of opponents and will be competing in the NEC in 2027.

Chicago State University President Zaldwaynaka "Z" Scott emphasizes the importance of this milestone:
