Chicago State University Recognized as a Carnegie-Designated Research University

Chicago, IL — Chicago State University proudly announces its recognition as a Carnegie-designated Research University in the newly released 2025 Carnegie Classifications. This milestone reflects CSU’s growing commitment to research, innovation, and academic excellence, and positions the university among an esteemed group of institutions nationwide.

The 2025 Carnegie Classifications distinguish research universities based on rigorous criteria, including research and development expenditures and the awarding of research doctorates. CSU’s designation as a Research University underscores its expanding research enterprise and its dedication to providing transformative educational opportunities for students from all backgrounds.

“What makes our achievement particularly remarkable is that we've maintained our open-access mission while building research excellence,” said President Zaldwaynaka “Z” Scott. “Our status as a Carnegie-designated Research University affirms our mission to foster discovery, drive innovation, and serve our community through high-impact research and scholarship.”

CSU’s Research University status acknowledges significant research activity and investment, while also highlighting the university’s unique role in advancing knowledge and opportunity. 

According to the 2025 Carnegie methodology, Research Universities are recognized for spending at least $2.5 million annually on research and development, distinguishing them as key contributors to the national research landscape.

CSU’s research strengths span a range of disciplines, with a focus on inclusive excellence and community engagement. Through strategic partnerships and innovative programs, the university continues to expand opportunities for students and faculty to engage in research that addresses critical challenges and drives positive change.
