I have just entered my second year as president of Chicago State University, Illinois' only four-year U.S. Department of Education-designated Predominantly Black Institution. Black student college attendance, retention and graduation is a priority for my administration, faculty and campus, and it should be for Illinois. There has been a 26 percent decline in attendance among black students at Illinois public colleges and universities, as Crain's highlighted in its recent article, "Looking for solutions to a black exodus in Illinois higher education." As Crain's noted, college attendance and degree completion of black students is vital to Illinois' workforce and economy.
