Grad Success Rate Soars in Athletics

Chicago State Athletics LogoThe Chicago State University Department of Intercollegiate Athletics recorded the highest Graduate Success Rate and Federal Graduate Rate totals in school history following National Collegiate Athletic Association's release of the totals for all NCAA Division I institutions this afternoon.

CSU tallied a GSR of 72 percent which jumped seven points higher from its rate of 65 percent from last year and marks the fifth consecutive year in the improvement on the rate. Two teams earned perfect 100 percent GSR scores in women's basketball and volleyball.

"We are very proud of the continued academic success of our student-athletes," CSU Associate Vice President and Director of Athletics Dr. Denisha Hendricks said. "Special thanks go to all of our coaching staff and academic staff. Our GSR and FGR results are truly a reflection of CSU Athletics putting academics first."

The numbers reflect GSR scores for student-athletes who initially enrolled in college in 2008 and it also includes transfer students and student-athletes who'd leave the University in good academic standing. The federal graduation rate, however, does not count transfers in its totals.

Men's tennis posted a perfect 100 federal graduation rate score with women's tennis following with a 71 and volleyball recording a 67.

"GSR is in its 11th year and we're very proud that our numbers continue to climb," said CSU Associate Athletic Director of Academics Karen Schiferl. "Academics are a big part of the culture of CSU Athletics. It is a team effort involving the entire institution. These numbers are a testament to our student-athletes, coaches, athletic department staff and the University's support structure and staff."
