Archives & Records Management Specialization of the M.S.L.I.S. Degree Program

Completing the Master of Science in Library and Information Science program with an Archives and Records Management (ARM) specialization will prepare you for a career in a wide variety of settings including: archives, libraries, special collections, government agencies, and private corporations. The program examines theoretical principles in archival studies and emphasizes practical training in administrative work. Students who specialize in archival studies will learn to use updated technologies to organize, preserve, and provide access to the growing data assets. The competencies developed in the program will enable ARM students to develop and administer an information service in a multicultural and technological society.

The field experience (LIS 5970 Field Practicum) is integral to the successful completion of the Archives and Records Management specialization.  Students must complete a field experience with a focus on archives. A total of 3 credit hours of fieldwork are required. Fieldwork is generally completed later in a student’s program.

The Master of Science in Library and Information Science program at Chicago State University is accredited by the American Library Association Committee on Accreditation, with the status of Initial accreditation. The next comprehensive review visit is scheduled for Spring 2026.
