Continuing the Tradition: Preparing All Candidates To Support (P-A-C-T-S) Student Learning
Adhering to our P-A-C-T-S conceptual framework, the College of Education (College) has Prepared All of our Candidates to Support student learning for almost a century and a half. Since 1867, the College has equipped education professionals with the skills needed to teach in the classroom and other settings, oversee instructional programs, lead educational organizations, and serve in various other capacities in Pre-K-12 schools, libraries, recreational facilities and beyond.
The five PACTS frames that comprise our conceptual framework and guide daily activities throughout the College are: Professionalism, Assessment, Content Knowledge, Technology and Standards. When candidates exit our programs, they demonstrate professionalism through performances in the classroom, leadership in the professional community, continuous personal development, and practices of integrity and honesty. They employ appropriate assessment methodologies for different types of accountabilities and outcomes in classrooms and other settings. They evidence knowledge of their content area(s) and pedagogy through performances in the classroom and other environments. They are proficient at integrating technology as instructional and productivity tools. Finally, all programs through which our candidates matriculate are designed around standards that identify best practices in the classroom and beyond.
The success of our efforts is documented by the University's continuous accreditation since 1941 from the Higher Learning Commission (HLC) of North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. Following the University's lead, the College has been been accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) since 1954. In addition to having NCATE accreditation for more than half a century, all programs in the College are accredited by the Illinois State Board of Education and approved the Illinois Board of Higher Education. Individual specialized professional organizations and associations (SPOs and SPAs) accredit education programs in the Colleges of Education and the Arts and Sciences. The College is currently focusing energies on efforts that will result in accreditation by NCATE once again in 2012
The second decade of this century finds the College more determined than ever to become a global leader in transforming and informing education in general and urban education in particular. We running full speed ahead to assist the University in its endeavor to Embrace, Engage, Educate, and Empower (4Es) all students to reach their full potential. We remain keenly aware that, to be successful at these undertakings, we are intricately dependent upon the support and assistance of the committed COE team of faculty, staff, administrators and students.
