CSU Graduates the Class of 2019

Vice President of Diversity and Inclusion at Hyatt Hotels, Tyronne Stoudemire told graduates, “There is a job that awaits you at Hyatt Hotels” during his speech at Chicago State University’s Commencement ceremony on May 9, 2019.

He is a proven thought leader on diversity and inclusion, a strategist and certified administrator for the Intercultural Development Inventory and a certified facilitator in Cultural Transformation Tools.  At Hyatt, Stoudemire implements culture, talent, and marketplace strategies that leverage diversity and inclusion globally, growing the enterprise across the brand portfolio.

Stoudemire encouraged the class of 2019 to move forward with confidence; “You have the ability and insight to change the workforce like never before.” During his speech he shared his perspective on the three things that will change ones life; time, wealth and health.  “You can have it all but not all at the same time.”

Student speaker, Terrell Odom who earned a doctorate in Education shared a story of adversity and perseverance with fellow graduates, many of whom could relate. “Today, a highschool drop out, a military veteran, a husband and father of two stands in front of you fine people delivering a commencement speech not only to receive his doctorate degree but to fulfill the promise he made to his parents.”  Odom experienced many trials in his life including the death of his mother and father and recently while in graduate school he lost his brother and sister to violence and a drunk driver.

“If completing college was easy, everyone would do it,” said Odom.

Chicago State University President Z Scott acknowledged the hard work of graduates and the support of their family, friends and faculty.

“For many of you there have been many starts and stops along to the way to a college degree, a masters degree, a doctoral degree but you have made it and you have crossed the finish line.”

President Scott ended her address by asking graduates to remember Chicago State.

“As you leave Chicago State remember Chicago State.   Remember the professors that helped you, remember the faculty that took the time to recognize your progress as a student.”
