Chicago State University President Appoints Dwayne Betts as Chief of Police

Following an internal search process, former Chicago Police Department Deputy Chief Betts
has been appointed to serve as next Chief of the CSU Police Department

 

CHICAGO (Aug. 16, 2023) – Chicago State University President Zaldwaynaka (“Z”) Scott, Esq. announced that she has appointed Dwayne Betts to serve as the Chief of the Chicago State University Police Department, effective immediately. Betts previously served as the Deputy Chief of the Chicago Police Department and reported directly to the CPD Superintendent.

Betts’ appointment followed an in-depth, internal search process for the department’s next supervisor. "Dwayne Betts' outstanding track record of law enforcement service to the City of Chicago exemplifies the leadership skills and abilities needed for our next Chief of Police. His 33 years in law enforcement includes engagement in community policing and other public safety initiatives," said President Scott.

Betts joined the Chicago Police Department in 1983, where he rose through the ranks of patrol officer, sergeant, lieutenant, district commander and deputy chief.  He retired in 2019.

“I look forward to serving CSU alongside the dedicated officers of our police department as we work together to create a stronger Chicago State University Police Department,” said Chief Betts.
