CSU Student Wins National Presidential Scholarship

Chicago State University physical education teacher candidate, Scott Leu, is one of three undergraduate students nationally who will be awarded a 2017 SHAPE America Ruth Abernathy Presidential Scholarship.

The scholarship was established by past presidents of SHAPE (Society of Health and Physical Educators) America, in honor of Ruth Abernathy who served as the organization’s president from 1954 to 1956. The award is based on the student’s documented scholastic proficiency, leadership, school, community, professional activity and service.

Leu will receive the scholarship during the SHAPE America Convention March 15-17, 2017 at the John B. Hynes Veterans Memorial Convention Center in Boston. “My professors at Chicago State University have taught me so much and have opened doors to many opportunities in the health, physical education, and recreation field,” said Leu. “I am looking forward to student teaching and applying everything I have learned.”

Leu currently lives with his wife and daughter, in Villa Park, IL. He graduated from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in December 2007, and worked for six years in advertising before deciding to study physical education. He is expected to student teach at Glenbard North High School in Carol Stream, IL and then Westdale Elementary School in Northlake, IL this spring.
