Student Testing Requirements

Freshmen or First-Time Students starting Fall 2019 or later

All freshmen or first-time undergraduate students who are admitted to begin their enrollment at Chicago State in the Fall 2019 semester or later must complete the University placement exams in English Composition and Mathematics prior to enrolling in their first term. These placement exams determine placement into general education courses in English and Math, which are required for all undergraduate students.

Transfer Students starting Fall 2019 or later

Undergraduate transfer students who are admitted to begin their enrollment at Chicago State in the Fall 2019 semester or later must take placement exams in English Composition and Mathematics if they did not transfer courses that completely fulfill their university general education requirements in English and Math. All undergraduate students are required to complete 6 credit hours (2 courses) in English Composition and 3 credit hours (1 course) in college-level Math. Students who transfer no courses in English Composition must take the English placement exam to determine placement into their required first-semester English Composition course, and students who transfer one course in English Composition must take the English placement exam to determine their placement into their required second-semester English Composition course. Students who do not transfer a college-level Math course must take the Mathematics placement exam to determine their placement into their required general education Math course.

Transfer students who have completed and transferred an Associates of Arts or an Associates of Science degree have completed their university general education requirements, and therefore these students do not need to take any placement exams. Students who have previously earned a Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science degree are also exempt from all placement exams.

Students who started before Fall 2019

All undergraduate students who began enrollment at Chicago State prior to the Fall 2019 semester must complete the English Composition and Reading placement exams in order to meet their graduation exam requirements. In addition, students must take the Mathematics placement exam if needed in order to place into a college-level Math course that meets university general education requirements.

Transfer students who have earned and transferred an Associate of Arts or an Associate of Science degree, or who have previously earned a Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science degree, are exempt from all university exam requirements, including graduation exam requirements.
