Military/Veterans Federal Benefits

GI Bill®

To ensure your educational benefits claim is processed in our office in a timely manner, please submit all requested information at the same time.

How to Apply

To receive the GI Bill®, all applicants must complete and return the following:

  • Application for VA Education Benefits Form 22-xxxx
    • 22-1990 - Chapters 30, 33, 1606, 1607 or 32
    • 22-5490 - Chapter 35 (Dependent Benefits)
  • If you are a veteran, copies of the DD-214's Member 4 Copy must accompany your application.If you have multiple enlistments, submit a Member 4 copy of your DD-214 for each enlistment. To obtain a copy of your DD-214 (Member 4 copy) you can either log onto the National Archives Database or complete and submit an SF-180 form available in the Office of Veterans Affairs.
  • Current active duty personnel only: The Educational Service Center on base will complete a DD-295 form or a Smart Transcript.

Educational claims are processed through the Department of Veterans Affairs Office in St. Louis, Missouri. The Department of Veterans Affairs will notify you in writing in approximately 4-6 weeks, stating your benefit entitlement. You should begin to receive your GI Bill® benefits approximately 8-10 weeks after you submit your enrollment to the Veterans Coordinator.

Satisfactory Academic Progress Requirements

Recipients of all Chapters of the GI Bill® must maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0 and a cumulative course completion rate (CCR) of 67% or higher. The cumulative standards look at every class you have taken at Chicago State University, regardless of whether or not you were receiving benefits during that time period.

Policies and Procedures

  • Complete all admissions/enrollment procedures with the Office of Admissions and notify the Veterans Coordinator.
  • To maintain your GI Bill®, you must submit an Enrollment Certification Request form for each semester.
  • Report any schedule changes (add/drops/withdrawals) during the semester to the CSU Veterans Office. Benefit Entitlement is approved only for course required to complete your degree objective.
  • Report any change in mailing address with the Office of the Registrar and to the CSU Veterans Office.
  • Report change of your program of study to the CSU Veterans Office in writing.  Note: A change of degree objective is subject to approval by the Department of Veterans Affairs.
  • Monitor your curriculum with your academic advisor. Classes not applicable to your degree will not be covered by VA.


Additional Information Needed for GI Bill®

CH 33 Post 9/11 GI Bill® - Must have a minimum of 90 days Active Duty after 9-11-2001

  • Copy Member 4 copy of DD214 from each enlistment.
  • Official transcript from any prior college and/or military training, sent directly to the Office of Admissions.

CH 30 Montgomery GI Bill® - Active duty began after 7-1-85

  • Copy Member 4 copy of DD214 from each enlistment.
  • Official transcript from any prior college and/or military training, sent directly to the Office of Admissions.

CH 32 V.E.A.P. Active Duty from 1-1-77 until 6-30-85

  • Copy Member 4 copy of DD214 from each enlistment.
  • Official transcripts from any prior College and/or military training, sent directly to the Office of Admissions.

CH 34/30 Old GI Bill® Active Duty prior to 1-1-77

  • Copy Member 4 copy of DD214 from each enlistment.
  • Copy of your Marriage Certificate (if applicable).
  • Copy of your divorce decree, as well as spouse (if applicable).
  • Copy of your Children or stepchildren birth certificate.
  • Official transcript from any prior College and/or military training, sent directly to the Office of Admissions.

CH 35 Dependent spouse, surviving spouse, son or daughter

  • Copy of Marriage certificate. (If spouse/surviving spouse).
  • Copy of birth certificate (son or daughter).
  • Official transcripts from any prior College and/ or military training, sent directly to the Office of Admissions.

CH 1606 Montgomery GI Bill® for Reservists

  • VA form DD-2384 Notice Of Basic Eligibility (NOBE).
  • Official Transcripts from any prior college and/or military training, sent directly to the Office of Admissions.

CH 30,32 and Ch 34/30 - Active Duty

  • The Education center on base must complete a DD 295 form (Smart transcript).
  • Official transcripts from any prior College and/or military training, sent directly to the Office of Admissions.
