M.A. in Educational Leadership and Administration - Principal Preparation Program

Program Purpose

On May 7th, 2013, the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) approved Chicago State University’s new program to prepare transformational urban school leaders, which will be offered in partnership with several school districts and schools. This endorsement is required for:

  • principals,
  • assistant principals, and
  • staff filling other similar or related positions.

Program Options

  • 27 Credit Hours for Principal Endorsement-Only for Candidates with Master’s Degrees
  • 36 Credit Hours for MA in Educational Leadership and Administration + Principal Endorsement

Application Procedure

To apply for admission to the program, students should: contact the Graduate School Office at Chicago State University (773) 995-2404 and request an application packet (directions and procedures are specified in the packet). Applicants may also download the packet here

Admission Requirements

In addition to the University’s general requirements, the applicant must have:

  1. An earned Bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited college or university;
  2. A grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 grading system;
  3. Two letters of recommendation from school administrators or supervisors who are familiar with the candidate’s work;
  4. Three (3) years of full-time teaching at the K-12 level in a public, private or parochial school setting; and
  5. A current and valid teaching certificate;
  6. Proof of passing the Illinois Test of Basic Skills.
  7. Applicants who meet these general requirements will be invited (a) to present a professional portfolio, and (b) submit an on-site written response to a scenario.
