Dr. Howard Johnson Appointed VP of Student Affairs

CHICAGO (OCTOBER 28, 2008) — Chicago State University President Frank G. Pogue has named Dr. Howard C. Johnson as Vice President of Student Affairs and Enrollment Management. Johnson comes to Chicago from the University of North Texas, where he has served as Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, Interim Vice President for Research and Technology Transfer, special assistant to the chancellor, and professor of mathematics.

Johnson holds several degrees in mathematics, including bachelor’s and master’s degrees from CSU, a second master’s from the University of Illinois, and a doctorate in mathematics education from Northwestern University.

As one of seven children growing up in Chicago, Johnson graduated from Crane Technical High School and was the first in his family to obtain a doctorate.

While serving as provost at North Texas, Johnson instituted a strategic hiring and salary enhancement plan. As dean of the graduate school at Syracuse University, he spearheaded a program that prepared future faculty for teaching, research and professional service. He also played a major role in the recruitment, retention, and mentoring of the more than 55 African-American and Latino faculty and administrators hired at Syracuse between 1989 and 2003.

Johnson said much of his effort will focus on CSU’s mission to maintain a student-centered environment. He is especially concerned about attracting and retaining African-American males to the campus, which is currently more than 70 percent female.

A member of many professional societies, Johnson has served on the board of directors for the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics. He served as both President and Vice President of the Association of Graduate Schools and is a consultant and participant in several educational research groups.

He and his wife Denise are the parents of two sons. Mrs. Johnson earned her doctorate in education at Syracuse and received her diploma from her husband, who was dean of the graduate school at the time.
