CSU Honors Students Shine at National Honors Conference

CHICAGO (OCTOBER 30, 2008)—Students from the Honors College of Chicago State University stood out at the 43rd Conference of the National Collegiate Honors Council, October 22-25 in San Antonio, Texas. Accompanying the six students were the Dean of the Honors College, Dr. Richard Milo, and Program Manager Celia Hall Francies.

“Chicago State University and the Honors College are highly regarded in the national honors community,” said Milo, “both for the quality of our students and for our innovative and ambitious program.”

Representing the College of Arts and Sciences was Rudolph Hampton, a senior majoring in history/secondary education. Representing the College of Health Sciences was Janet Carrillo, a junior majoring in pre-occupational therapy. From the College of Education were Elliott Hines, who graduated with a degree in history from CSU and is obtaining teacher certification; and Aisha Huisar, a senior majoring in early childhood education. Ashley Sanchez, a junior accounting major represented the College of Business, and Honors College alumnus Arturo Jurado is a CSU graduate student in mathematics.

Huisar and Hampton served as invited participants in the Student Fishbowl, a roundtable session of ten students discussing what makes a good honors program. It was the third consecutive year that CSU Honors College students were invited to participate in the Fishbowl. “Aisha and Rudolph were superb,” said Milo. “I have been assured by the organizer, Dr. Alison Primoza, that she will continue to come to us for our ‘wonderful students.’”

Graduates Hines and Jurado served as moderators for four of the conference sessions. Milo said panelists and audience members praised them for their poise and professionalism. He also said the CSU students were recognized for their participation and attendance in other sessions. “Two honors directors said how impressed they were with our unique application process, which they learned about when Mr. Hampton shared the information in a session on honors recruiting.”

Milo said the CSU students significantly contributed to the diversity of the event. “Our students accounted for about 10 percent of students of color among roughly 1,000 student attendees.”
