Family and Consumer Sciences
Mother and Son
The department of Technology and Education offers a Family and Consumer Sciences (FCS) program as an option of the undergraduate degree in Career and Technical Education. The mission of the proposed program is to develop knowledge, skills and dispositions needed to improve the quality of family and work life and to promote health and wellness among consumers in the Chicago Metropolitan area. This mission carries out Chicago State University's commitment to "assist in the development of socially, economically viable and sustainable communities." FCS education provides the knowledge necessary to increase self-sufficiency among consumers by empowering them with the knowledge and skills needed to manage their personal and family lives and to fulfill work and career responsibilities.
The curriculum is designed to align with standards for Family and Consumer Sciences educators as set forth by State Board of Education. It includes courses in each of the following five areas: Family Relationships; Parenting and Interpersonal Relationships; Human and Child Development; Apparels and Textiles; Living Environments; Nutrition Wellness and Hospitality.

The program leads to a Bachelor of Science degree in Education in Career and Technical Education and the Illinois Type 09 Secondary certificate for Family and Consumer Sciences Education. It requires 121 semester hours of completion.
