The major charges of the Task Force on the Student Body were to examine current conditions of student life as they relate to recruitment, admission, retention, change of major, academic progress and graduation. In addition, the members examined delivery of services to students by the offices of Financial Aid, Bookstore, Disabled Student Services, Financial Affairs, Registrar, Residence Life and Evaluation and Advisement. The task force studied the purpose and function of these areas to determine how best the offices can satisfy the needs of students.
Support services are critical to the success of the educational program and the image of CSU. Students reported that efficiency of these support processes have the highest priority for them as any decline in efficiency results in long lines or additional trips to the campus. Many students reported a perception that their observations and concerns about these processes and other conditions on campus were not heard and that students were not valued as customers of the university. The areas in which students expressed the most dissatisfaction were financial aid, financial services, registrar's office, evaluation and advisement, examinations, bookstore and parking. Students reported that financial aid was not provided in an efficient, timely or respectful manner. They further indicated that often the financial aid information that they were given was contradictory and misleading. This task force also found that students indicated that personnel in these administrative offices were very rude, disrespectful and unwilling to offer assistance. They further indicated that the lack of resources in the library including journals, books, copy machines, and computers negatively impacted their educational efforts. Students requested more honors courses, updated laboratory equipment, e-mail accounts and adequate numbers of textbooks available in the bookstore at the beginning of the semester. They also expressed a desire for an office charged to assist international students with visa and other immigration issues and problems. Finally, students requested that CSU develop an efficient communication network for the campus and with the outside community. |
