CSU Alumus Commits To 2017 Teach For America Corps In Hopes Of Making A Difference In Inner City Schools

Your Time to Change Things is Now(Chicago, February 8, 2017) Chicago State University alumnus and former military service member, Marcel Brown, has committed to joining the 2017 Teach For America corps (TFA).

Brown graduated from Chicago State University in 2012 with a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice. After completing four years of service in the United States Marine Corps, Brown has committed to teach in a low-income public school in Las Vegas.

“Marcel‘s story and commitment to national service is unique among his peers. We know his career serving those in need, both at home and abroad speaks to the passion and commitment to civic life so many of Chicago State University graduates share,” said Lauren Barber, Manager, Teach For America.

At Teach For America, the main goal is to recruit diverse, passionate and talented leaders that are devoted to expanding the opportunity of the nation’s highest-need children. The program requires TFA members to teach two years for urban and rural low-income public schools in one of their 53 regions, while partnering with communities that are most affected by educational inequity.

Teach For America’s mission aligns with the mission and core values of Chicago State University; teaching, service and community development. “Marcel's display of tenacity has afforded him many opportunities. I am confident that he will excel with Teach For America just as he did as a student of Chicago State University", said, Cecil Lucy, Interim President, Chicago State University.

Marcel Brown is not the first CSU alumni to embark on this journey to help others. Chicago State has had three other alumni to commit to Teach For America; the most recent graduate being Ms. Fenala Flemming, who joined TFA in 2015 and is currently teaching in New York. Chicago State University prides itself on producing top-notch talent who give back to their community.
