Computer Science

Department Chairperson: Howard Silver
The Department of Mathematics and Computer Science offers a Master of Science degree in Computer Science. The program is designed to be as flexible as possible to meet the varied needs of students. Four courses are explicitly required, and the remaining eight courses are chosen after consultation with the graduate advisor to ascertain individual needs.

General Requirements


* Fulfillment of the general requirements for admission to the graduate program.
* A bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution with a B average or better in post-calculus mathematics courses and an undergraduate concentration in mathematics. An undergraduate concentration in mathematics is defined as successful completion of at least four post-calculus courses.
* An applicant not having a B average (3.0) or better in post-calculus courses may be required to complete three approved post-calculus courses with a B average before being admitted to the degree program. Upon admission these courses would count toward degree requirements.
* Completion of at least thirty-three credit hours of graduate courses.
* A maximum of twelve credit hours of approved 300-level courses
may be applied towards the degree provided a grade of B or better is earned in each. Two of these 300-level courses may be chosen from any 300-level computer science course.

Specific Requirements

* Required courses at the 400-level: MATH 415, 420, 495 and one course from the following: MATH 408, 410, 411
* Completion of three additional courses at the 400-level to be selected with the approval of the graduate advisor.
* Completion of twelve additional hours to be selected from among any 400-level courses or the following 300-level courses: MATH 308, 315, 318, 325, 326, 327, 329, 342, 345, 354, 355, 356, 358, 361, 370, 377, 378; CPTR 301, 305, 307, 308, 309, 310, 313, 317, 320, 333, 339, 340, 341, 355, 356, 357, 358, 360, 362, 365, 366, 368, 370, 371, 372, 381.
