The Department of History, Philosophy, and Political Science offers a Master of Arts degree in History, a Bachelor of Arts degree in History, and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science.
The master's degree program offers study in American, African-American, Urban, European, and World History. The program is designed to meet the needs of secondary school history teachers and those preparing to teach history at the community college level.
The bachelor degree programs prepare students to pursue advanced degrees in their area of specialization as well as careers in law, public service, government, and foreign affairs.
In addition, the department provides an opportunity for students in other disciplines to pursue a concentrated study of history, philosophy, or political science by offering a minor in each of these areas.
All degree-granting programs in the department are assessed using a uniform plan (see within each program section of the department’s web presence). Results indicate that relative to program outcomes our students accomplish learning expectations and that as graduates and alumni they are satisfied with their learning experience in our department. Our students say that what they learn here facilitates their pursuit of graduate education and employment goals.
Various courses in the disciplines of history, philosophy, and political science also are assessed as part of the university’s general education curriculum. These courses are assessed, and the data indicates that students improve over the course of the semester in attaining general education learning outcomes.
