Sociology Major

General Requirements

Admission to the program is contingent upon good academic standing and acceptance by the department. The department will not accept D grades in transfer credits in the department. Achievement of a grade of C or better is required in all major courses at Chicago State University. Students must complete 120 semester hours of work to graduate.

Course Offerings: Typically 20 or so courses offered every semester. Classes are offered in mornings, afternoons, evenings, and weekends. (About half of our majors are primarily evening and weekend students.)

  • Social Foundation Class: Soc 215, 225, 253, 257
  • Social Inequality Class: Soc 255, 259, 270, 303
  • Social Institutions Class: Soc 206, 308, 324, 380
  • Social Change Class: Soc 202, 252, 302, 355
  • Additional Requirement: Choose one additional class from the list above


Sociology Electives - 12 credit hours

  • 6 Credits of sociology/social work at the 200 or 300 level
  • 6 credits of sociology/social work at the 300 level
