Chicago State University is governed by an independent Board of Trustees, composed of business, community and civic leaders appointed by the Governor of the State of Illinois for renewable year terms. According to the newly revised version of the Carnegie Classification system, the university is currently classified as a Master's (Comprehensive) University. CSU is accredited by both the Higher Learning Commission formerly North Central Association of Colleges and Schools located in Chicago, Illinois, to award Bachelor's, Master's and Certificate degrees, and the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) for teacher preparation and teacher certification. In Illinois, CSU is authorized to operate and offer degrees by the Illinois State Board of Higher Education which is located in Springfield, Illinois. A number of the individual university departments, degree programs and service functions are accredited by appropriate professional organizations.
  • CSU provides a very personal education for a 7000 diverse student population, with a variety of ages, states, nations, and cultures represented. The average class size is 19.
  • CSU student athletes, men and women, compete at the highest NCAA level – Division I. CSU is a member of the Mid-Continent Conference. We offer 14 sports that compete at the NCAA Division I Level.
  • CSU hosts the only public research library located on the far south side of Chicago. The $35 million dollar, 4-story signature structure opens fall 2004. Among other features, it will house an automated document retrieval and sorting for 500,000 volumes and delivery from closed stacks in 80 seconds.
  • CSU houses several centers for research and scholarly exploration. They include the Center for Urban Mental Health Research, the Minority Biomedical Research Program, the Research Development Office, the Neighborhood Assistance Center, and the Calumet Environmental Resource Center, among others.
  • Black Issues in Higher Education consistently includes CSU among the top producers of both master's and bachelor's degrees in select majors which places it in the rare company of just 10% of all American universities.
  • Nearly 35,000 CSU alumni live and work in the Chicagoland region. Famous alumni  include major entertainment figures including philanthropic leaders; teachers; small business owners; media executives; enterntainment stars; business executives and researchers; among others.
  • CSU is one of only a handful of universities that offers the combined bachelor/master program in Occupational Therapy.
In 2002, the Black Issues in Higher Education magazine ranked CSU among the:
  • Top 100 colleges and universities that awarded master's degrees to African American students
  • Top 25 colleges and universities for bachelor's degrees for African American students in the nation.
