Online Learning @ CSU

Online learning can be an attractive option for students who meet certain criteria.  In online

courses, students will have access to interactive chat rooms, discussion boards, surveys,

exams and more. Participants will log onto the course website, interact with their instructor

and peers, attend online workshops, submit coursework, and take exams.

Questions for Instructors

Before teaching an online course, instructors should ask themselves the following questions:

  • Am I comfortable using basic technology?
    • Programs like MS Word and PowerPoint
    • Navigating the Web, uploading/downloading files, using basic email functions
    • Basic troubleshooting
  • Am I willing to check and answer my email every day?
  • Will I be able to make online learning at least as rigorous, challenging, and engaging as

              face-to-face learning?

  • Am I willing to think differently about how to make, distribute, collect, and grade assignments?

If you answered "yes" to all four questions, then you should consider enrolling in CSU's

Online Certification Training (OCT) course. It is a 4-6 week course that gets you

ready for what to expect as an online instructor. Call the CTRE at 773-995-2960 to find out

when the next enrollment window is.

  • Am I good at managing my time?
  • Do I possess good organizational skills?
  • Am I able to adapt to new learning environments?
  • Do I have reliable access to the internet?

If you answer "yes" to each of these, then you might want to consider taking online courses.

This may be an attractive option to consider, for the benefits include:

  • Attending class at a time that best fits your schedule
  • Being in close communication with your instructor via email and online discussion
  • Being immersed in a rich learning environment that focuses on collaborative learning
  • Connecting with your peers in a more open, democratic setting than traditional classrooms

If you're ready to take the first step, then take the Online Assessment System for Internet Students (OASIS).

It will tell you more definitively whether or not you are sufficiently prepared to take online courses.

Depending on your score, you may
