Facts You Should Know About the PSI 2008 Summer Program
Prematriculation Summer Institute (PSI) The Office of Engineering Studies at Chicago State University (CSU) is pleased to announce its Summer 2008 Prematriculation Summer Institute (PSI).PSI was established to assist students in developing skills needed forsuccessful completion of the Engineering Studies Program at CSU and to prepare students for transfer to the Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT) or the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC).The program offers academic advising, interactive lectures and workshops,faculty mentoring programs, internships, scholarships, student study centers, and career counseling. Field trips to IIT and UIC are an integral part of the program.
The program can be paced to fit students’ scholastic background and individual learning needs. PSI Goals
To provide students with an overview of college life.
- To increase student awareness of career opportunities in engineering through course work, field trips, competitions, and workshops.
- To develop effective study habits.
- To encourage utilization of academic resources and services.
Admission Requirements
Applicants must be in the top half of their high school graduating class and satisfy each of the following criteria:
- A minimum ACT composite score of 18 or rank in the top 5% of their high school graduating class.
- Three years of regular high school mathematics (Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II/Trigonometry, Pre-Calculus, Calculus or College Algebra).Computer science and computer math are classes that are not applicable.
- Three years of laboratory science (Biology, Physics, Chemistry and Advanced Placement courses in Biology, Physics, or Chemistry courses are applicable).
Program Dates
The 2008 PSI Program will begin on Monday, June 16, 2008 and end on Thursday, July 24, 2008. Applications are due Friday, May 9, 2008.
Program Cost
Tuition is free for the summer program.Students also receive a modest stipend for participation.
Course
Description
The program consists of six weeks of progressively advanced topics in mathematics, technical writing and survival techniques. Classes are held Monday through Friday, from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.The following is a description of each course:
Applied mathematics with an emphasis on equations and inequalities, rectangular coordinates, lines, functions, graphing, polynomials and rational functions.
Technical writing with emphasis on reasoning skills, paragraph and essay development, grammar usage, punctuations, and mechanics.
Survival tech with emphasis on effective study strategies, career exploration, library and research orientation, note taking, testing strategies, and time and stress management.
