| Assessment/Learning Specialist
General Purpose: Develop activities that promote student retention and academic success, support College assessment strategies, and enhance faculty teaching effectiveness. Provide direct academic support services to pharmacy students and faculty at Chicago State University College of Pharmacy. Academic support services include consultation (individual and group) regarding academic learning strategies and skills, College assessment activities, and and the development and implementation of related materials and programs.
Responsibilities:
1 . Develop and implement a support program to identify and assist students who may be “at risk” for academic difficulty. Create individualized learning strategy enhancement plan for students as needed, monitor progress of students and maintain records of all individual and group contacts.
2. Provide direct student services, including academic counseling and learning strategies instruction. General areas of counseling, instruction, and/or facilitation in areas including time management, reading efficiency, note-taking, organization for learning, test-taking, board preparation, writing, problem-solving, math enhancement and related topics.
3. Coordinate tutorial and peer services for the College of Pharmacy. Assist with the recruitment, training, and supervising of tutors and peers. Work closely with the Associate Dean to develop and administer methods by which tutors and the tutoring and peer counseling experience can be evaluated.
4. Work with the Associate Dean in developing, implementing and evaluating institutional, programmatic and curricular assessment strategies for the College of Pharmacy.
5. Assist faculty with the development of small learning community workshops on specific learning strategies.
6. Utilize counseling skills to effectively assist students in assessing, identifying, and resolving deficiencies to enhance and/or remediate academic performance. Assist in preliminary identification of learning disabilities.
7. Develop learning resource materials and activities specific to the needs of the students.
8. Work closely with the Abilities Office and the Counseling Center in screening and facilitating the referral process for students in need of related resources both on and off campus.
9. Serve as part of an overall student development team and perform other duties as assigned by the Assistant and Associate Deans.
Minimum Qualifications:
1. Masters degree in Educational Psychology, Higher Education, Counseling or other relevant behavioral science, or the equivalent combination of education, training, and experience from which comparable skills can be acquired.
2. One to two years of post-degree experience providing educational assessment and intervention strategies to diverse professional students.
3. Prior training and experience with assessment techniques for a professional student population. Assessment experience may include use of intelligence, achievement, neurological, and learning style testing.
4. Prior experience working with educational and assessment theories, strategies and applications.
5. Prior experience conducting educational workshops, seminars, and groups.
6. Demonstrated excellence in written and verbal communication skills. (Sample writing required)
7. Demonstrated familiarity with standardized exams, test formats, and test-taking strategies.
8. Familiarity with computer software and applications (Microsoft Office, SPSS and related educational software.
Preferred Qualifications:
1.
2-5 years counseling and/or assessment experience, preferably in a health professions school setting;
2. 1-2 years administrative experience;
3. Interest in scholarly activities including publishing and presentation at regional and national meetings; and
4. Some experience conducting formal assessments of various learning disabilities and other syndromes, including ADD.
This is a full time position with a start date of July 1, 2008 and this individual will report to the Assistant Dean for the College of Pharmacy.
