FB/TIP Official SymbolField Based TeacherInternship Program (FB/TIP)

Program Goal

The goal of the Field Based Teacher Internship Program is to develop an internship model that focuses on issues, topics and best practices in Pk-12 grade school settings.  This model prepares early childhood, elementary and secondary education majors for urban, rural and international “real world” schools.

Program Overview

The College of Education of Chicago State University has expanded the Field Based Teacher Preparation Program to include international teaching and learning experiential opportunities for its candidates.  This program was piloted in 1996 at Van Vlissingen Elementary School, now Lavasso Elementary School.   Upon the graduation of the first cohort, the program moved to Dixon Elementary School and Morgan Park High School until the spring of 2006.  The name of the program was  changed to Field Based Teacher Internship Program, fall 2006.

The Field Based Teacher Internship Program (FB/TIP) affords College of Education majors the opportunity to acquire additional teaching experience in diverse school settings.   The program is generally a two- year period, with a five-day week flexible schedule.  A typical week includes a candidate, under the supervision of a mentor teacher, practice teaching in the classroom, at least two days a week and participating in scheduled professional practice seminars on campus.  A technologically fully equipped resource room is provided within each school to accommodate the needs of  FB/TIP interns and faculty.  Applicants must be education majors and have a GPA of 3.0.  Field Based interns also have an opportunity to complete a four to six week study-abroad/international internship. The FB/TIP is NOT a substitute for any requirements in the major; therefore, students MUST adhere to the requirements for their major programs.

Highlights of the Program

  1. FB/TIP interns engage in on-going professional development for improvement of pedagogical content knowledge.
  2. FB/TIP interns participate in Illinois Certification Test Preparation Workshops.
  3. FB/TIP interns teach lessons in mentors’ classrooms, Monday-Thursday and participate in scheduled seminars on Friday.
  4. FB/TIP interns gain considerable practice prior to completing the required program internship and student teaching practicum.
  5. FB/TIP interns will be assigned to elementary and/or high schools for two or more internship periods.
  6. FB/TIP interns will be awarded stipends for each semester of participation in the program.

Field Based  interns also have an opportunity to complete a  four to six week international teaching experience during the Summer

Field Based Study-Abroad Program.
