Testing Information
Students must pass three or four (depending upon the program) Illinois Certification Tests at various points in the certification program.
Illinois Certification Test of Basic Skills (ICTBS) – All initial certification students must pass this before formal admission to the College of Education. Advanced students must pass the ICTBS for admission to their programs.
Language Proficiency Test – students in the Bilingual Education program must pass this before formal admission to the College of Education.
Content-Area Test – all initial certification students must pass the appropriate content-area test before they will be placed in student teaching. Advanced students must pass the appropriate content-area test in accordance with their specific program requirements.
General Education Curriculum Test – required for all students completing the Special Education LBS I program. Initial certification students must pass this test before student teaching; advanced certification students must pass this in accordance with their specific program requirements.
Assessment of Professional Teaching (APT) Test – required for all students completing programs leading to type 03, 04, 09, and 10 teacher certificates:
- Initial certification students must pass the appropriate APT test before they finish student teaching;
- Subsequent certification students must pass this before program completion;
- Advanced certification students must pass this in accordance with their specific program requirements.

University Qualifying Examinations
Undergraduate students also are required to pass the University Qualifying Examinations unless they passed the Illinois Certification Test of Basic Skills before entering Chicago State University in an education program.
