Middle School Education Program The Middle School Education program offers initial certification degrees at the undergraduate and graduate level - the Bachelor of Science in Middle School Elementary Education for undergraduates and the Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) for graduate students whose baccalaureate degree is in a field other than education. This option leads to a certificate for grades K-9 with an emphasis at the middle grades. These candidates are considered highly qualified at the middle level in two areas of concentration as required by the National Middle School Association and the No Child Left Behind Act. In addition, graduate students, whose baccalaureate degree is in a field other than education, have the option of following the certification track. Graduate students, who choose the certification track, follow the same program as undergraduate students; the methods courses they take are at the graduate level.
