The physical education  program is accredited by the Nationalnaspe Association for Sport and Physical Education (NASPE), and meets Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) standards in physical education.  Completion of the Physical Education Program qualifies students for an initial Type 10 Illinois Special Certificate in physical education for grades K-12, or an Initial Type 03 Elementary Certificate and a Type 09 High School Certificate, endorsed in Physical Education for grades K-9 and 6-12, respectively.  Certification requires the successful completion of the Illinois Certificate Tests of Basic Skills, Physical Education, and Assessment of Professional Teaching (Special: K-12).

Mission
Optimal physical development, in addition to cognitive, psychological, and social development, are an integral part of one's total development.  In order for one to achieve maximum physical development, the incorporation of various forms of physical activity into one's daily routine is necessary. Physical education adheres to the basic philosophy that organic, neuromuscular, emotional, cognitive, and social development of the individual can be enhanced by maintaining a high level of physical fitness.

The position is also held that regardless of one's abilities or disabilities, there are activities that can be incorporated into one's pattern of living that would contribute to the physical component of wellness. From experiences in various physical activities, students may have opportunities to interact with others and develop both socially and emotionally. In addition, they will grow in appreciation of their own physical well being, and recognize the necessity of maintaining a high level of wellness.

Vision
The vision of the Undergraduate Physical Education Program is to (1) provide undergraduate major students the opportunity to learn and teach in diverse settings in order to enhance their knowledge on working with all individuals, (2) provide opportunities to participate in and give leadership to local, state, and national professional organizations, (3) prepare undergraduate major students to be competitive with graduates of other professional preparation programs, for admission to graduate schools and for employment opportunities, and (4) to engage students in controlled learning situations by teaching skills, techniques, and obtaining knowledge related to physical education.

Values
The Undergraduate Physical Education Program values:
  • a healthy lifestyle to endure a good quality of life throughout the lifespan
  • service contribution to the community and society
  • diversity through inclusion of all individuals regardless of ability level
