Physical Education Graduate Program - (FAQs)
NASPE

Our mission is to offer professionals in health education and physical education an opportunity to advance their knowledge. Students will be exposed to classroom and field experiences designed to help develop the knowledge and skills for continued professional growth. The program encourages students to become conscientious consumers of professional information in an effort to make a positive impact on students, colleagues, and communities.  The program is accredited by the National Association of Sports and Physical Education (NASPE).   Click here for additional links.

General Requirements

Admission

  • Fulfillment of the general requirements for admission to graduate programs. 
  • Completion of an undergraduate major, minor, or the equivalent of at least 24 credit hours in physical education. 
  • Three letters of reference describing the applicant’s potential as a graduate student in physical education. Only one letter may be from a family member or friend.
  • Completion of courses or their equivalents in kinesiology, measurement and evaluation, physiology of exercise, and adapted  physical education, as prerequisites for the program. These prerequisite courses must be completed before applying to the program.
Completion  
  • Fulfillment of the Graduate School general requirements for graduation.
  • No more than six semester hours from other universities are accepted towards transfer credit.
  • Completion of a minimum of 34-credit hours at the graduate level, with no more than 15 hours at the 300G-level.
  • Completion of all degree requirements within six years.
  • A 3.0 GPA is required to graduate.

Specific Requirements

Students admitted to the program Fall 2008 or later will be in the new curriculum and will follow either a comprehensive exam or thesis track.  This curriculum is the new curriculum as listed on the new curriculum GAPP form Students admitted prior to Fall 2008 follow the old curriculum GAPP form (see link: Forms and Paperwork).

Research Option (Thesis) 
Required Courses @ 12 credit hours: PE 5000, 5230, and 491. A thesis is required with PE 491.
Electives @ 22 credit hours:  Courses to be selected with advisor approval. 
An oral defense of the thesis is required.
Total = 34 credits

Teacher Education Option (Non Thesis)                                      
Required Courses @ 24 credit hours:  PE 5000, 5230, 5406, 5090, 5110, 5270, 5160, and 5030.
Electives @ 10 credit hours:  Courses to be selected with advisor approval.
A written comprehensive exam is required.
Total = 34 credits

Additional Program Information
Completion of the P.E. master’s degree does not lead to teacher certification. The master's degree does not certify a graduate to teach in the public schools. For information about teacher certification or physical education endorsements, contact the Office of Teacher Certification at 773-995-2519.

Students may take a maximum of 12 hours as a Graduate at Large Student before they must apply to the program.

Students admitted January 2008 and after are only allowed two C grades. Any courses with C grades beyond the minimum of two, must be retaken for a higher grade in order to graduate from the program. 

No D grades are accepted. Any course for which a student earned a D must be repeated for a higher grade (this grade, however, cannot be a C if the student already has 2 C grades as stated above).

A maximum of 6 hrs may be transferred from another university.  All transfer courses must have a grade of B or better.
  • Potential transfer courses taken prior to admission must be approved at the time of admission to be counted towards the degree. Approval must be granted by the department and the Graduate School Dean. To gain the Dean's approval, an extra original transcript must accompany the application for admission.
  • Potential transfer courses taken after admission must first be approved by the student's advisor and the Graduate School Dean. Students must submit the “Permission to Take Transfer Hours” form and all supporting materials.
As of fall 2003 Drivers Training Courses (formerly HS 350G, HS 410 and HS 411) will not be accepted as electives. Any student admitted prior to summer 2003 is not affected and can still use these courses. Students admitted summer 2003 and after cannot use these courses.

All courses (including transfer courses) must be 6 years old or less at the time of graduation.
