Chicago State University conducts a science van program which consist
of Pedagogical Content Knowledge Courses and Courses on implementing inquiry-based
activities for high school physics teachers in the Chicago area. The goals of the program are (1) to
provide physics teachers with courses on implementing hands-on inquiry-based
teaching using both basic equipment and technology and (2) to provide
teachers, who have completed this course, with follow-up support through a
van service that will bring the laboratory equipment to the teacher's
classroom. |

The
Chicago State University (CSU) Robert Noyce Teacher Scholars Program will
facilitate STEM undergraduates and STEM professionals in becoming effective
high school science teachers in the Urban School District through
scholarships, mentoring, and induction year support. Noyce
Fellows receive tuition and support for living expenses as well as
opportunities for internships and travel to local and national science
education conferences. |

Our newest program, PhysTEC, has the goal of increasing
the number of highly qualified physics teachers in the Chicago Area. The Chicago State University PhysTEC
Program seeks to (1) increase the number of students in our secondary
education program in physics, (2) increase the number of students pursuing
certification in science with a designation in physics, (3) create a stronger
connection between our inservice programs and our preservice programs, (4)
provide an early teaching/reflection opportunity that links inservice and
preservice teachers, and (5) provide appropriate research and teaching
opportunities for preservice teachers to develop strong Pedagogical Content
Knowledge (PCK). |
