Bachelor of Science in Physics: Degree Programs

The Department of Chemistry and Physics offers BS degrees in physics with three program options including: the traditional physics option, the physics teaching option, and the engineering physics option (in preparation).

The physics degree program provides the student with a basic education in physics with an emphasis on conceptual understanding and problem solving skills. An important goal of the program is that students develop solid mathematics skills, computer programming and excellent preparation in electronics and the experimental technique. The department provides a number of research opportunities for undergraduate students both in the summer and during the academic year.

The Three Options:

  • Traditional Physics Option

This option is intended for students who either plan to attend graduate school in physics or a related field, or students who want to enter industry with a more theoretical background. suggested program

  • Secondary Teaching Option

  • This option prepares students for teaching high school science with a designation in physics. Students who complete the program receive a degree in physics from the college of arts and sciences and a teaching certificate from the college of education. suggested program more information

  • Engineering Physics Option (in preparation)

This option prepares students to enter technical fields. It also provides a good background for students who intend to transfer to an engineering school. suggested program

These three options allow a student to prepare for a number of vocational alternatives. Students who complete our program in physics would be prepared for a number of options including:
  • Graduate school in physics
  • High school teaching of science with a specialization in physics
  • Engineering and technical positions in labs
  • Managers and technical operators for companies and agencies
  • Patent law staff
  • Analysts for markets and mathematically complex careers
  • Computer companies: networking and programming

Recent graduates of this program have participated in almost all of these categories.
