Physics Van Inservice Institute at Chicago State University

Generously supported by the Illinois Board of Higher Education with additional support from the American Physical Society.

Description of ProgramNewton's 3rd Law

Chicago State University conducts a physics van program for high school physics teachers in the Chicago area. The program is part of the Chicago Collaborative for High School Science Education and Outreach and involves CSU, Chicago Public Schools and The University of Illinois (Chicago).  The goals of the van program are (1) to provide physics teachers with courses on implementing hands-on inquiry-based teaching using both basic equipment and technology and (2) to provide teachers, who have completed this course, with follow-up support through a van service that will bring the laboratory equipment to the teacher's classroom. Physics Van Activities attempt to address common difficulties students have with different physics topics. During the inservice course we will participate in the activities and practice thinking about questions that help students construct an understanding for themselves.

We regret that the physics van will not be offered in Summer 2010. Look out for information about our summer 2010 Biology Van and Chemistry Pedagogical Content Knowledge Courses. Both provide free graduate credit and stipends.
