The El Valor Initiative

In Fall semester of 2008, the Chicago State University Social Work Department, in partnership with El Valor and the Latino Social Workers Organization initiated a community based Master of Social Work program at one of the El Valor Program Sites. El Valor is a non-profit community based organization founded in 1973. El Valor has partnership arrangements with a number of colleges and universities in the Chicago area. This is the first social work program offered through El Valor. The Latino Social Work Organization is a progressive social work organization and has been a leader in the recruitment and retention of professionally trained Latino social workers. This partnership was created to increase the number of linguistically and culturally competent mental health practitioners to address the needs of public and private sector organization. The curriculum is based on the three year part-time model with classes offered in the evening two nights a week.
