Assessment Highlight/Story: Data-Driven Decision-Making

Counseling Graduate Program

Consider your curriculum/programmatic changes since the last NCATE Review Cycle in 2003. Are there any unique or major changes that were made based on assessment, evaluation, or other data measures?

What we looked at:

  • Student Learner Outcome 6. Implement an appropriate plan of intervention to use in effectively teaching and counseling clients, including urban youth.

  • How we assess(ed) it:

What it means:

Part Two of the Comprehensive Examination involves the analysis of a clinical case report.  Students must be able to:  assess the client, analyze the underlying causes of the client’s problematic behavior, choose appropriate tests needed to evaluate the client, and develop an appropriate, theoretically- driven, comprehensive treatment plan.

Historically, the case conceptualization and writing of our students needed improvement.  Consequently, we instituted the use of several case conceptualization and writing assignments in all three clinical courses with increasing expectations.  As the students received repeated feedback on the process, their performance improved.  In addition, a review was developed that helped students better integrate the need knowledge and skills required on this exam.  As a result, performance on the exam has improved and become more consistently at the mastery level.

What we did/going to do about it:

Historically, the case conceptualization and writing of our students needed improvement.  Consequently, we instituted the use of several case conceptualization and writing assignments in all three clinical courses with increasing expectations.  As the students received repeated feedback on the process, their performance improved.  In addition, a review was developed that helped students better integrate the need knowledge and skills required on this exam.

What happened

Case conceptualization has been emphasized in both the clinical and preclinical courses.  With the emphasis on this type of conceptualization and clinical writing, performance on the exam has improved and become more consistently at the mastery level.  In addition,  a new course was also developed that will be offered in 2013 that will specifically cover case conceptualization and treatment planning.
