Bachelor of Music Education

General Requirements

Admission to the College of Education is required prior to registration in any professional education courses other than MUSM 1261, ELCF 2000; Psyc 2020; and Sp Ed 4301.

A grade of C or above is required in all general education, professional education and music courses, either as transfer credit or completed at Chicago State University. A grade of B or above is required in student teaching.

A maximum of nine hours of professional education course taken at a junior or community college can be transferred into the program.

Professional education courses completed more than five years before admission to the College of Education, either as transfer credit or at Chicago State University, will not be accepted.

A minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.5 in all program course work, either as transfer credit or completed at Chicago State University, is required for admission to the College of Education.

Courses taken at Chicago State University that are required in a teacher education program may be repeated no more than twice. The highest grade will be included in calculating the grade point average. Students who no not earn an acceptable grade in a required course after three attempts will be dropped from the program.

All music education majors will be required to pass proficiency examinations in theory, aural skills, piano, and the applied major senior recital before student teaching.

Admission to the College of Education requires successful completion of the Illinois Test of Basic Skills (English, Math, Reading). Enrollment in Student Teaching (MUSM 4076) requires successful completion of the Music Certification Subject Test (K-12). The final grade for Student Teaching requires successful completion of the Illinois Assessment of Professional Teaching (K-12).

All music education majors must perform a senior recital. The senior recital (MUSM 4800) must be a minimum of 25 minutes of music. Four weeks before each recital, the student must successfully complete a recital hearing for a minimum of three music faculty.

During enrollment in the university, all music education majors are required to register and participate in either the university concert band if an instrumental major, or the university chorus if a voice major, during the Fall and Spring semesters. Piano and guitar majors may choose between concert band or concert choir.

During enrollment in the university, all music majors are required to register for MUSM 1800 – Performance Class. This zero credit course is pass /fail and is based upon attendance at on-campus music recitals, concerts, or master classes.  Full-time enrollment requires attendance at a minimum of 10 scheduled music events.  Part-time enrollment requires attend attendance at a minimum of 5 scheduled music events. Students may substitute a maximum of two off-campus events with appropriate documentation.
