The Department of Communications, Media Arts and Theatre (CMAT) provides training for students in fields such as acting, radio, television, screenwriting, public relations, communication studies, digital filmmaking and multimedia. Our faculty bring a mix of research and industry experience to the curriculum with the goal of arming students with strong written and oral communication skills along with state of the art technical skills to meet the needs of the communications industry.
Our facilities include an HD television studio and radio station, HDV field production packages, HDV digital cinema equipment, a complete suite of Avid Media Composer video edit stations as well as audio and graphics production suites. Student produced programming is showcased on a 24-hour iHeart Radio station and CSU-TV, our 24-hour IP-TV station.
The department provides students with the option of selecting from one of three concentrations. Students who choose the Media Arts option are prepared for career paths in fields related to Radio, Television, Screenwriting, Digital Filmmaking and Multimedia. Students who opt for the concentration in Communications & Public Relations are prepared to enter careers in pubic relations and corporate communications. Students opting for the concentration in Theatre study for careers in acting, directing and stage craft. Students with a degree from our program also go on to earn graduate degrees in communications and as well as law, education and business.
Students in our program have received interships at media corporations throughout the region. Here are just a few of the internship opportunities our students have pursued: NBC Television, Fox Television, ABC Television, CBS Television, CLTV, WBEZ Radio, WGCI AM Radio, WGCI FM Radio, KISS-FM Radio, Sports Radio, ESPN Television, Chicago Sun Times, WGN Radio, Northwest Teleproductions, Chicago Office of Cable Communications, Showcase Television, Chicago Cable Access Corporation, WVAZ Radio. Award Winning Student Projects
Our students have won numerous awards and scholarships including the Robert Guillaume Scriptwriting Award, The Women in Film and Television Award, The Chicago Association of Black Journalists Scholarship, Black United Front Award, the Screening Prize from the Chicago International Film Festival and the Audience Choice Award from the Black Harvest International Festival of Film and Video.
Clubs and Organizations
