Cougars Fall to Drake, 83-53 December 7, 2007 Des Moines, Iowa – Josh Young’s 23 points led four Bulldog players in double-figures, as Drake University defeated Chicago State, 83-53 in the first round of the Drake Regency Classic at the Drake Knapp Center in Des Moines, Iowa. The Cougars dropped their second straight ball game and fall to 3-8 on the season. Drake improves to 7-1 with their sixth straight victory. John Cantrell led Chicago State with a team-high 20 points in only 23 minutes of action, as he was in early foul trouble. Cougars leading scorer, David Holston had 19 points, four assist and four steals in the loss. For the second straight game, CSU had the turnover bug, committing a season-high 27 turnovers. In the previous game against Cleveland State the Cougars turned the ball over 24 times. The Cougars kept the game close in the first-half behind 13 points from junior point guard David Holston. Holston, the nation’s leading three-point shooter connected on 3-of-4 from behind the arc. Drake opened up a 16 point first-half lead (30-14) with 5:49 remaining, but CSU responded with a 17-8 run to close out the half capped by a Holston three-pointer at the buzzer cutting the Bulldogs lead to seven (38-31) going into the locker rooms. Chicago State held their own in the beginning of the second-half, as CSU only trailed Drake by seven (52-45) with 14:12 remaining in the game. The Bulldogs proved to be too much for the Cougars as they closed the game out with a 31-8 run, cruising to the 83-53 victory. Chicago State will be back in action on Saturday, Dec. 8, when they take on the Tigers of Jackson State University at 5 p.m., concluding the Drake Regency Classic. |
