Instructor: Arlene Hayes

Course: CAD-T

Lesson Title: Relative Coordinates in Computer Assisted Drafting

Grade Level: 9-12

Time Frame: 85 minutes (Block Schedule)

Illinois State Goal:

Learning Objective---Illinois Learning Standard (Math>

7.A.4a - Apply units and scales to describe and compare numerical data and physical objects.

10.A.3a - Construct, read and interpret tables, graphs and charts to organize and represent data.

Learning Activity

General Objective: To introduce new CAD commands, OFFSET, RECTANGLE, COPY, MULTICOPY, MIRROR, TRIM, and MOVE. Students will understand methods of duplicating existing entities with correct usage of new and previously mastered commands on AutoCAD

Behavioral Objective(s): Upon completion of today’s lesson, students should be able to:

  1. Determine and set OBJECTSNAP commands.
  2. Use ORTHO mode to draw straight lines if necessary.
  3. Enter coordinates and numeric conversions correctly.
  4. Use OFFSET, RECTANGLE, COPY, MULTICOPY, MIRROR, TRIM, and MOVE commands to assist in completion of Complex Drawing drawings.

Initial Activity or Bell Ringer

5 minutes

·        Inform students to take a handout from a designated location in the lab and log onto AutoCAD.

  • Take daily attendance and perform other administrative class duties while students are logging on.

·        Enter lab, retrieve new handouts and log onto computer.

·        Open AutoCAD.

Lesson Activities

20 minutes

·        Lecture on and demonstrate following:

Ř      Use of the following new commands:  OFFSET, RECTANGLE, COPY, MULTICOPY, TRIM, MIRROR, and MOVE commands via computer projector.

·        Distribute Simple Drawing handout. Measurement conversions.

·        Instruct students to reproduce the Simple Drawing.   Emphasize the importance of appropriate text at the command line location.

·        Instruct students to label drawing DR1 and save it on their H drive.

·     Take notes throughout lecture,

·     Observe and duplicate, demonstrations

·     Produce Simple Drawing.

·     Save drawing.

50 minutes

  • Review Simple Drawing #1 Information
  • Distribute Complex Drawing Handout.
  • Instruct students to reproduce Complex Drawing
  • Inform students that this should be made ready for placement in their electronic portfolio.

·        Take notes during lecture:

·        Begin Complex Drawing drawing.

2 minutes

  • Instruct students to label drawing DR2, save drawings to H drive, and log off computers.

·        Save drawings to drive designated by instructor

·        Log off computer.

8 minutes

Inform students to complete Self- and Instructor-Assessment instrument, which can either be a handout or an On-line assessment instrument.

Complete and submit assessment instrument to instructor.

Supplemental Activities and Suggested Resources:

Compare previously mastered commands with new commands and determine which commands accomplish the same goal with fewer steps. Determine which commands allow the designer to complete a drawing more efficiently and accurately.

Review the following web sites for interactive information on coordinates:

Note to Instructor: Students may use this instrument or he/she may be directed to a site where an Online Assessment instrument is provided. Click here to access the Online Assessment instrument.

Directions: Considering today’s lesson, respond to the following by answering yes or no. If necessary, provide a brief explanation for items that request an explanation.

Student Self Assessment:

  • Did I remember when it is appropriate to use ERASE versus TRIM command?
  • Did I understand when it is appropriate to use COPY versus when to use MIRROR?
  • Are my drawings 100% accurate, according to the solution posted?
  • Was it possible for me to produce accurate drawings quicker utilizing new commands?
  • Did I labeled and saved my drawing to the hard drive?
  • Am I able to produce other drawings utilizing new and previously taught AutoCAD LT commands, information/instructions in Chapters 1-4 of the Mechanical Drawing textbook, and by using instructional handouts?
  • Are my drawings completed faster and more accurately using the new commands?
  • Is knowing how and when to use certain CAD commands important for designing and creating technical drawings? If yes, briefly explain.
  • Will the new commands that I learned today allow the graphics language to be more effectively communicated to others?

Student Assessment of Instructor:

  • Were the commands covered today presented in an easy-to-understand sequence that allowed me to become familiar and comfortable with the software?
  • Was the information presented today covered today presented so I could build on what I learned during previous lessons?
