The following courses listed below are the requirements needed to obtain a Bachelors Degree in Psychology. Note, if you are a transfer student, then some of these courses can be substituted to fulfill your requirements. Please be aware, this is just a guide. Most of the courses listed below are examples of classes you can take. In addition, if you have any questions regarding this major, then please contact a Psychology Advisor.
1. English Composition (6 credit hours)
- If you have not taken the English Placement Exam then do not take a composition course and schedule to take the exam as soon as possible. If you have taken the English Placement Exam, follow the recommendation of your test results.
- Transfer students are still required to take the English Placement Exam even if you have transferred in a Composition 1 and or Composition 2.
2.Modern Language (6 credit hours)
The following are examples of course that your advisor may suggest you take to fulfill your modern language requirement.
- If you are well versed in a certain language, you may take the CLEP Exam to replace a class.

3. Humanities (12 credit hours)
The following are examples of courses that your advisor may suggest you take to fulfill your humanities requirement.
- Check Schedule Bulletin for other classes without Prerequisites. Note: classes with a “+” sign have prerequisites
- You must take one Fine Arts class with consist of an Art, Music, or a Theater course.

4. Mathematics (3 credit hours)
- If you have taken the Mathematics Placement Exam, refer to the recommendation of the test results.
- You may have a Mathematics Waiver if you took a College Algebra equivalent. Ask your Advisor if this applies to you.

5. Physical, Life Science, and Computer Science (9 credit hours)
- Note: Chemistry / Physics can be a substitute for Physical Science and Botany / Physiology / Zoology can substitute for Life Science. One course must have a Lab.

6. Psychology
Psychology Core (40 credit hours)
*Note: the prerequisite for all Psychology courses is Psyc 1100.
PSYC 1100 – Introduction to Psychology
PSYC 2040 or 2000 – Child Psychology or Lifespan Development
PSYC 2080 – Introduction to Statistical Methods in Psychology
PSYC 2100 – Social Psychology
PSYC 4150 – Personality Psychology
PSYC 3100 – Cognitive Psychology
PSYC 4185 – Statistical Methods for Psychology
PSYC 4155 – Abnormal Psychology
PSYC 4100 – Experimental Psychology
Psychology Electives (12 credit hours)
These classes consist of all undergraduate courses in Psychology that are not part of the Psychology Core requirements.

7. Reading Requirement
If you took the reading placement exam, refer to the recommendation of your result.
- If you did not take the reading Exam, do not take a reading course. Take the Exam as soon as possible!

10. Additional Electives (38 credit hours)
You must take 9 credit hours of Social Sciences (in two disciplines) and these must not be Psychology courses. Examples include: African American Studies, Anthropology, Criminal Justice, Economics, Geography, History, Political Science, and Sociology.
11. Illinois State and Federal Constitution Requirement
- You may take the class POL: 1010 or HIST: 1310 which will also be counted towards your Electives -or- you may take the Constitution Exam.
