ENDORSEMENT IN SCHOOL COUNSELING GRADUATE CERTIFICATE PROGRAM

The purpose of the certificate program is to provide a Type 73 endorsement in school counseling for students who already possess a master’s degree in school counseling or related field. The program emphasizes the developmental school counseling model, strong clinical training, and applied field practice as a school counselor in an elementary and high school setting. Applicants must have passed the Illinois Basic Skills Test. In addition, they must have a valid Illinois teaching Certificate or the must take the course ED 382/G Educational Fundamentals in School Counseling as an additional program prerequisite. Providing they have passed the Illinois basic Skills Exam, students who do not have a valid Illinois Teaching Certificate maybe admitted conditionally pending successful completion of ED 382/G within the first year.

Program Prerequisites - 36 Hours of Prerequisites required
Program prerequisites include the following courses or courses judged by the program coordinator as having similar content:
PSYC 406 or 396G/400; PSYC 410 or 407 or 409; PSYC 412 or 355G/405; PSYC 413 or 347G/404; PSYC 414; PSYC 416; PSYC 417 or 422; PSYC 423; PSYC 431 or 433 or 419; PSYC 434 or 420; and 6 additional hours of graduate level electives in counseling or a related field (e.g., PSYC 367G, 428, 436, 445, 455, 465), not including courses in personality theory, abnormal psychology, or psychological statistics.

Course Requirements 15 credit hours
PSYC 424, 429, 443, 490.
Other Requirements

  • Proof of passing the Illinois Certification Content Area Test for school counselors prior to enrollment in PSYC 490.
  • The certificate must be completed in three years.
