Admission Requirements

Application materials (including official transcripts and two reference forms) must be received by the Graduate Studies Office by March 1 for the Fall Semester.

Applicants must have a minimum grade point average of 3.00 for the last 60 semester hours of course work to be fully admitted to the program (or 2.75 for conditional status).

Applicants who satisfy the above criteria must successfully complete a written essay and interview by the department.

Applicants for the School Counseling Track or the Endorsement in School Counseling Certificate Program must have passed the Illinois Basic Skills Test. In addition, they must have a valid Illinois Teaching Certificate or they must take the course ED 382/G, Educational Fundamentals in School Counseling as a program prerequisite. Providing they have passed the Illinois Basic Skills Exam, students who do not have a valid Illinois Teaching Certificate may be admitted conditionally pending successful completion of ED 382/G within the first year. Certified teachers must have proof of a passing score report on the Illinois Certification Test of Basic Skills passed anytime since 1987.

Due to limited class size, we are unable to accept all qualified applicants into the programs.
Provisional Admission
Admission to the program is provisional until the following criteria are met:
- Completion of prerequisite courses (Abnormal Psychology, Developmental Psychology, Theories of Personality, and Statistics) with a grade of B or better in at least three of the four prerequisite courses, and a grade of C or better in the remaining course.
- Completion of PSYC 412, 413, 414, 416, and 423 with a grade of B or better.
Successful completion of the application for candidacy after taking the pre-candidacy courses (PSYC 406/411, 410, 414, 416, and 423).
General Requirements for the Counseling Program

Completion of at least fifty-one credit hours at the graduate level with grades averaging B or better to meet general degree requirements.

Completion of all clinical courses (PSYC 431, 434, 490/491) with a grade of B or better.

Admission to candidacy after pre-candidacy courses (406/411, 410, 414, 416, and 423).

Successful completion of objective and essay comprehensive examinations.

For students in the school track or Type 73 endorsement program only, proof of passing the Illinois Certification Content Area Test for School Counselors must be received by the Counseling graduate program prior to enrollment in PSYC 490.

Completion of all degree requirements within six years.
