Summer College June 30 - August 08, 2008

Summer College is a six-week enrichment program designed to prepare 45 minority and/or underrepresented students in grades six through eight for college and beyond. In addition to college preparation through instruction and enrichment activities in mathematics, science, language arts and English, students will also receive academic and career counseling. Participants will also receive exposure to various career tracks through workshops, seminars, small group activities, lectures, interactive and hands-on projects and mentoring. Summer College students will have access to the university ’s classrooms, library, computer and science laboratories, counselors and student union.

Summer College will run from Thursday, June 28 through Thursday, August 02, 2007, at Chicago State University. Classes will operate from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday - Friday. Teachers will include university faculty, public and parochial school instructors and private industry leaders.

Qualifications

• Interest in a science or health career;
• commitment to work hard and attend the program regularly;
• parental/guardian involvement ;
• parental/guardian consent;
• counselor or teacher recommendation; and
• at or above grade level in mathematics and reading.

Selection Criteria

• ISAT test scores;
• current copy of report card;
• completed application;
• essay;
• recommendation;
• parental consent;
• interview;
• parental Involvement (Parent must volenteer one day);

According to the grade level of each participant in the Summer College, students will receive instruction and enrichment activities in mathematics, science, language arts, English, study/learning skills and academic/career counseling.

Language Arts/English

Reading, Vocabulary, Grammar, and Composition

Study/Learning Skills and Career Exploration

Test taking, listening, speaking, time management and biomedical careers exploration in health.
