Bachelor of Music
General Requirements
All performance majors are required a minimum of 4 semesters of applied lessons at the 100 level as well as the 200 level (4+4). Successful completion of the upper level applied proficiency examination is required before registration for 200 level applied lessons. The student must notify the instructor of her/his intent to complete the proficiency examination during her/his jury examination.
All performance majors will be required to pass proficiency examinations in theory, aural skills, piano, and the applied major area before graduation.
All performance majors must perform a junior and senior recital. The junior recital (MUSM 280) must be a minimum of 25 minutes of music. The senior recital (MUSM 380) must be a minimum of 45 minutes of music. Four weeks before each recital, the student must successfully complete a recital hearing for a minimum of three music faculty.
The department will not accept D transfer credit in the major. (Achievement of a C or better grade in core major courses completed at Chicago State University is required.)
During enrollment in the university, all music majors are required to register and participate in either the university concert or jazz band if an instrumental major, or the university chorus if a voice major, during the Fall and Spring semesters. All students registered for applied lessons must participate in the appropriate ensemble.
During full-time enrollment in the university, all music majors are required to register for MUSM 180 – Performance Class. This zero credit course is pass /fail. Successful completion requires attendance at a minimum of 10 on-campus music recitals, concerts, or master classes.
Students may substitute a maximum of two off-campus events with appropriate documentation.
Completion of 120 semester hours of work including:
| General Education – 36 hours: |
6 hours in composition;
6 hours of a foreign language;
9 hours in math, biology and physical sciences (including one critical thinking course),
9 hours in the social sciences, and
6 hours in the humanities (including MUSM 228-World Music Cultures); |
| Music Specialization – 67 hours: |
16 hours in music theory, aural and keyboard skills
9 hours in music history and literature
11 hours in orchestration, form and analysis, counterpoint, and conducting
3 hours in pedagogy (chosen from area of applied concentration)
8 hours in applied lessons at the 100 level (4 semesters)
8 hours in applied lessons at the 200 level (4 semesters)
8 hours in large ensemble (8 semesters)
4 hours in small ensemble (4 semesters) |
Music Electives – 17 hours:
17 hours in music electives selected with the approval of the departmental advisor
