Faculty: Jane Florine, Francisco Garcia, James Hendricks, Roxanne Y. Stevenson, Mark A. Sudeith, Pharez Whitted, Deborah Williams
The Department of Music offers the Bachelor of Music degree and the Bachelor of Music Education degree. The department offers courses to all students to broaden their understanding and enjoyment of music as a fine art. Completion of the Bachelor of Music degree prepares students for careers as agents, performers, arrangers, music consultants, and teachers. Completion of the Bachelor of Music Education degree qualifies students for an Initial Type 09 Illinois High School Certificate with a high school endorsement in instrumental or vocal music for grades 9-12, and a middle grade endorsement in music for grades 6-8. Certification requires the successful completion of the Illinois Certification Tests of Basic Skills and Music (6-12).
Admission to the department of music is contingent upon successful completion of a performance audition and written placement examinations in music theory and literature. All entering students who do not meet the minimum standards to be majors in the department may be admitted conditionally. Students must remove identified deficiencies within the first year of matriculation before being accepted as a music major. (Music majors desiring to change degrees in the department may do so by examination and approval of a faculty committee).
During each term of the school year weekly periods are set aside for student convocations and recitals. All students are required to participate in these either as performers or auditors. All music majors must register for MUSM 180 during each semester in which classes are being taken. Failure to complete this requirement will prevent the student from graduating. The only exceptions will be the following:
1. Students attending only night classes.
2. Students who are practice teaching.
Students who have no keyboard experience will be expected to acquire some proficiency in piano prior to completion of 60 credit hours. All students who expect to major or minor in music shall demonstrate proficiency in some performing medium by audition before they can be accepted.
All students who qualify may participate for credit, or without credit, in the various performance groups sponsored by the department. All students are encouraged to audition as early as possible for scholarship and financial aid consideration.
