The programs in the College of Business are four year programs
leading to a Bachelor of Science in Business, or to a Bachelor of Science in Hospitality
Management. They are designed to provide students with a broad liberal education which
will allow them to pursue careers in business, government, and entrepreneurship.
The curriculum for the Bachelor of Science in Business includes a general education
core, a business core, and a choice of five professional options: Accounting, Finance,
Information Systems, Management, or Marketing.
The curriculum for the Bachelor of Science in Hospitality includes a general education core, a business core, and a major core of required and approved elective courses as described in this catalog.
Eligibility for Admission
Students who have been admitted to the university may apply for admission to the College
of Business after the following requirements have been satisfied:
1) Pass all proficiency examinations (math, English, and reading).
2) Pass the following courses with at least C or better in each course.
English 128
English 279
Speech 203 or 221
Mathematics 161
Natural Science (3 hours)
Economics 101
Economics 102
Social Science (3 hours)
Accounting 110
Accounting 111
Management 103
Information Systems 137
3) Completion of a minimum of 45 semester hours of course work with a minimum of 2.5
CSU overall grade point average.
NOTE: Applications for admission shall be due two
weeks before the first day of early registration each term. Faculty advisors will be
responsible for reviewing applications. Provisional admission to the College of Business
is followed when a sophomore or transferring student would need to take College Business
courses to maintain a full academic load. Sophomore students seeking provisional
admittance must meet the cumulative GPA criterion (2.5), while transferring students must
have satisfactorily completed the university core and Business admission requirements at
their former institutions. Provisional admittance only applies until sophomores reach the
credit hour threshold (45) or transferring students have completed nine credit hours at
CSU. At that point, each student would be evaluated for admission based on the criteria
outlined above in item three. Students should see their faculty advisors to determine if
they qualify for provisional admittance.
Transfer Credit Requirements
The College of Business will grant credit for the following core courses provided that (a
) the course content was similar in nature to the course at Chicago State University, and
(b) a grade of C or better was received in the course: ACCT 110, 111, 290, 291: INSY 136,
137; MGMT 103; ECON 101, 102.
Upper division credit for ACCT 290 and 291 may not be available for credit in other
academic departments.
Credit for the above courses will also be accepted by successfully completing examinations
offered through the College Level Examination Program.
Four Year Colleges
The college will accept courses in business from four-year colleges accredited by their
regional accreditation body. These courses may be applied to the core requirements or the
professional option requirements where applicable, provided they are (a) similar in nature
to the course at Chicago State University; and (b) a grade of C or better was received in
the course.
Two Year Colleges
The college will accept upper division courses in business provided they are similar in
nature to the course at Chicago State University. This is done by successfully passing a
proficiency examination for each course based upon the relevant material in the following
courses: ACCT 212, 213, 293; FIN 266; INSY 200; MGMT 249; MKTNG 276.
The Department Chairperson, in exceptional cases, may waive the requirement for a
proficiency examination.
Academic Policies
Academic departments will not accept any D letter grades in the professional option. The
college will accept no more than one D letter grade in the core requirements completed at
Chicago State University. The Bachelor of Science degree in Business will be awarded after
completion of 120 semester hours credit in the following disciplines; 6 hours in
composition; 12 hours in humanities; 12 hours in mathematics; 12 hours in natural
sciences; 12 hours in social sciences; 42 hours in the business core; 224 hours in the
professional option; and completion of the examinations on the state and federal
constitutions. Waivers, substitutions, and other modifications of this policy will be
considered after the student has submitted an academic petition to the appropriate
chairperson.
Specific Requirements
General Education Requirements (54 credit hours):
COMPOSITION (6 credit hours): ENG 127, 128.
HUMANITIES (12 credit hours): ENG 279, SPCH 203 or 221; 6 credit hours selected from
English, fine arts, foreign languages and philosophy. MATHEMATICS (12 credit hours): MATH
161, 162, 201 or 209, 214.
NATURAL SCIENCES (12 credit hours): To be selected from the biological and physical
sciences.
SOCIAL SCIENCES (12 credit hours): ECON 101, 102; 3 credit hours to be selected from ECON
201, 206, 207. 3 credit hours to be selected from one of the following disciplines;
anthropology, corrections, geography, history, political science, psychology, or
sociology.
Business Core Courses (42 credit hours): ACCT
110, 111, 290 (Accounting professional option must substitute ACCT 291 for ACCT 290); FIN
266; INSY 137, 200, 224, 226; MGMT 103, 249, 251, 308, 358; MKTG 276.
Business Major Professional Option Courses (24 credit
hours): 24 credit hours must be selected in one of the following major professional
fields; Accounting, Finance, Information Systems, Management, Marketing.
Accounting - ACCT 212, 213, 214, 292, 293, 315, 317; three credit hours of electives
selected with the approval of the departmental academic advisor.
Finance - FIN 366, 367, 368, 369; twelve credit hours of electives selected with the
approval of the departmental academic advisor.
Information Systems - INSY 136, 284, 327, 310, 328, 330; six credit hours of electives
selected with the approval of the departmental academic advisor.
Management - MGMT 209, 260, 262, 264, 310; nine credit hours of electives selected with
the approval of the departmental academic advisor.
Marketing - MKTG 375, 378, 380, 383; MGMT 310; nine credit hours of electives selected
with the approval of the departmental academic advisor.
