Online learning has become a major force in higher education. It affords motivated
students the opportunity to study at their own pace and in a manner that suits their
demanding schedules. Chicago State University and the CTRE are committed to bringing
this flexible, powerful means of learning to all students.
Online classes need to operate through a learning management system (LMS). Just as
at institutions like MIT, Ohio State University, and Texas A&M, Chicago State University
uses Moodle. Moodle allows students to download reading materials and assignments, watch class
videos, post to discussion boards, take quizzes, and much more--all online.
At CSU, Moodle is managed by the CTRE. The department ensures that it runs smoothly,
and assists users - both students and faculty - with troubleshooting. If you need
assistance using or understanding Moodle, schedule an appointment (below) and one
of our technicians will be happy to help.
As of August 26, 2013, Chicago State University has officially upgraded Moodle! This
upgrade offers students and faculty greater functionality, flexibility, and user-friendliness.
The CTRE is hosting ongoing training sessions nine times every week.
Mondays & Tuesdays

10:00, 1:00 and 3:00
via Collaborate (formerly Elluminate) in CSU-Instructors
Courses are not automatically transferred from the old version of Moodle to the new
version. It is the responsibility of faculty members to either transfer their courses
themselves or contact the CTRE for assistance.
- Transferring Course Content Yourself
Moodle allows instructors to back-up and restore all course materials into new empty
course shells. Included below are video tutorials that show you how to transfer your
course content. This is the same process that the CTRE staff uses. By transferring
course content yourself, you will ensure a more expedient outcome.
- Transferring Course Content with CTRE Assistance
If you wish to request that one or more of your courses be transferred, you will
need to complete a brief Course Transfer Form.
You can learn more about the new version of Moodle by watching this introductory video and reading about it on Moodle Docs.
If you have further questions, you are also welcome to contact the CTRE directly at
