Bullying: Identification, Prevention and Intervention

Bullying has gained national attention in recent years, therefore becoming a growing concern in schools, homes and the community. This workshop will present data on the prevalence, discuss the social isolation and power struggle relating to bullying, offer effective strategies in identifying bullies, and offer practical suggestions for implementing bullying prevention strategies in schools and in the community.

Adolescent Substance Abuse and Sexuality in

Contemporary Culture

There are many complex issues facing adolescents today. Substance abuse and sexuality are two of the most salient ones. Being able to provide positive, productive and hopeful responses to these issues are important for anyone working with this population. A variety of instructional methodologies will be used such as lecture, small group activities and case studies to engage participants in a highly interactive process of learning.

Hip-Hop (Culture & Media) as a Worldview & Its' Implications for Client Conceptualization and Treatment

Effectively counseling clients born between 1965 and 1995 (Gen X,Y and millennials) requires understanding on how their worldviews have been shaped by profound contradictions between socio-economic, educational, cultural and communication systems and trends over the last 30 years. The workshop presenters will trace how hip-hop culture signals these population groups’ ideas, attitudes, values and opinions. Applying the psychological worldviews theoretical approach to these factors, the workshop will present strategies to help counselors contextualize clients’ presenting issues and devise productive treatments.
